Tezpur is a town in Sonitpur district, Assam state, India. Tezpur is located on the bank of the river Brahmaputra. Tezpur Municipal Board was Constitud in 1894 under the provisions of Municipal act. The board cover an area of 7.10 sq. km.The board has a council of 19 elected ward commisioners.

Tezpur located on the banks of the river Brahmaputra in the Sonitpur district of Assam, is a historical and mystique city and has many ancient and mythological artifacts. Tezpur is regarded as the fifth largest city of Assam after Jorhat, Guwahati, Silchar and Dibrugarh. Tezpur was initially known as ‘Sonitpur’. ‘Sonit’ means blood in Sanskrit. It is said that in ancient times, during the battle between Banasura’s army and Krishna’s army there was so much bloodshed that the whole region was stained in red. Hence Sonitpur came to be known as ‘Tezpur’. The name Tezpur is derived from ‘Teza’ which means blood and ‘Pura’ means city.

Tezpur also has much historical significance. One of the major mythological and historical aspects is the eternal love story of Usha and Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. Apart from mythological significance, the city has several number of historical aspects linked to it. The British colonial initially founded Tezpur as headquarters of Darrang district in the year 1835.

Tezpur is situated on the banks of river River Brahmaputra. The city also has several hillocks and so flood does not occur during the monsoon. The climate of Tezpur is moderate. The temperature remains between 20 to 38 degrees Celsius during summer and the winter season the temperature ranges between 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. Rainfall in the region is typically high. The best time to visit Tezpur is from to April. 

Tezpur Municipal Board has been devided 19 numbers of Wards. Total population of Tezpur Municipal area is 58,559 as per census, 2011.

Tezpur is regarded as the cultural capital of Assam. Tezpur can be seen engulfed in dance and music, festivals and many more . The important festivals celebrated in Tezpur are Bihu, Balichar Festival, Sivaratri Fair, Bare Shaharia Bhaona, New Year, Diwali, Holi and Durga Puja. Among all these Festival Bihu is the most important festival celebrated in Tezpur.
